One morning, while checking my water bill, I was shocked to see a much higher amount than expected. What puzzled me even more was that nothing in our daily routine had changed—we weren’t using more water than usual. So where was all that water going?
That’s exactly the question I asked myself when I realized our consumption was far above average. After a few checks and small adjustments, I managed to significantly reduce it. Here’s how it all unfolded.
An Unusually High Water Bill: What to Check First
When I saw that we had supposedly used 140,000 liters of water in a single month, my first thought was that something had gone wrong. Compared to the national average—around 4,470 liters per person per month—the number simply didn’t make sense.
I contacted our water provider to report the issue. Their conclusion? A meter reading error. Once corrected, our actual consumption turned out to be 47,000 liters. Still high for a household of three, but far more realistic.
If your water bill seems abnormally high, the first thing you should do is verify that the meter reading is correct. A simple administrative mistake can end up costing you a lot of money.
