The Simple Trick That Helped Me Save 10,000 Liters of Water Every Month

To make sure our meter was working properly, I carried out a very basic test:

  • I noted the numbers displayed on the water meter.

  • I filled a three-liter container with water.

  • I then checked the new reading on the meter.

The result confirmed that the meter was functioning correctly. There was no technical failure and no major hidden leak.

If you suspect a leak, you can do a similar test overnight: check the meter before going to bed, avoid using any water during the night, and check it again in the morning. If the reading has changed, a leak is likely.

Reducing Water Consumption: Small but Effective Changes

Once I knew the water usage was real, it was time to look for solutions. By paying closer attention to our daily habits, I noticed something important: the water pressure in our apartment was extremely high. This meant that every time we turned on a tap, we were using more water than necessary.

The solution was simple. I slightly closed the main water supply valves to reduce the pressure.

The result? We still had plenty of water for everyday needs, but the taps and shower wasted much less. The only downside was that the bathtub took a bit longer to fill.

Other small actions can also make a big difference:

  • Install aerators on faucets to reduce flow.

  • Choose quick showers instead of baths.

  • Regularly check toilet tanks and taps to prevent hidden leaks.
