Start by unwrapping your puff pastry. If you are using purchased refrigerated dough, leave it on the line for a few minutes so that it softens and does not crack when handled. Roll it out gently to get an even surface on which to place the ingredients.
Puff pastry is an ideal base for recipes like this because it is quick, fluffy and creates beautiful layers. You don’t need to prepare it in any way – just roll it out and use it.
2. Layering the ham and cheese
Start by layering slices of ham and cheese alternately on the prepared dough. Try to spread them out so that they cover as much surface area as possible and create a nice spiral when cutting the rolls.
Tip: If you want a more pronounced flavor, use a more aromatic cheese like cheddar. If you prefer a milder version, reach for Edam or Gouda.
You can place the slices close together so that the rolls hold their shape after baking and don’t spread apart.
3. Rolling the dough
Once you have the ham and cheese laid out, the most fun part comes – rolling. Start on one long side and roll the dough tightly into a roll. Roll slowly so that the filling doesn’t move and a nice, even spiral is created.
This step is very important, because it is what creates the beautiful appearance of the finished rolls.
4. Slicing
Cut the finished roll into pieces about 2 cm thick. If you want even shapes, use a sharp knife. Serrated knives can pull the cheese, so they are less suitable.
