Chocolate Pie, Old-Fashioned Style

1. Bake the Crust
Prepare the pie crust according to package instructions (or your favorite recipe) and allow it to cool completely.

2. Make the Chocolate Filling
In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, flour, cocoa, and other dry ingredients. Add milk, egg yolks, vanilla, and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens to a smooth, pudding-like consistency.

3. Fill the Pie
Pour the hot chocolate filling into the cooled crust, smoothing the top with a spatula.

4. Prepare the Meringue
In a clean, grease-free bowl, beat egg whites with cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. Gradually add sugar, continuing to beat until glossy and firm.

5. Top & Bake
Spread or pipe the meringue over the chocolate filling, creating swirls and peaks. Bake at 350°F for 10–15 minutes, until lightly golden.

6. Cool & Chill
Allow the pie to cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour before slicing.
